Three ways to shop differently this holiday season

The official launch of the holiday shopping season has begun. Why not try something different this year and support our economy and the people who need it the most.

With a little effort, you can make a big difference to small business owners this holiday season, and you will end up with unique gifts and often a much more pleasurable experiences.

1. Buy direct from an Artist!

Artists are people that make things. Maybe they paint, knit, make jewelry, pottery or something you've never heard of. Most likely if you buy a gift made by an artist, it will be a unique gift that is almost certainly unique and appreciated.

Some places to buy from artists directly are...

Their studio.

Many times artists allow you to come to their studio and see how they make their art. We are lucky to have the River Arts District in Asheville where there are many different studios to choose from. Seek out places like this in your community.

Many times you can find the artist directly by visiting their online shop like Byrd Designs hair accessories and handcrafted jewelry.

Etsy is another place where 1000s of artisans sell their handcrafted items.

2. Support your local restaurants

Visit some of the family owned restaurants in your town. Take your family, try a new place, and see if they offer gift certificates. If possible seek out restaurants that also serve local food.

When you support a local business, most of the money that you spend stays in your community and you end up helping your home town. For more information about shopping local visit 3/50 project.

3. Visit your downtown center and shop at some of the local businesses.

Many times we go the mall or a big box store just because we are familiar with them. Try visiting one of your locally owned stores and you may discover some unique gifts (and people) that you didn't know existed.

So enjoy this holiday season, choose where you spend your money and make a difference to those that need it the most.

Shop Small Businesses for the holidays.

Please feel free to post your favorite local and small businesses below!

All about hair accessories

There are many different types of hair accessories that you can use to liven up your everyday style.

One of the most popular and simple to use is the French barrette.

For some great barrettes by Byrd Designs visit us here.

It is important to make sure that you buy a French quality barrette or your clip won't stay in your hair. It may cost you a little more upfront but once you recognize the difference, you'll never go back.

Another common type of hair accessory is the bobbie pin. There are many different ways to wear bobbie pins and they are possibly the most fun and versatile. There are two common sizes to bobbie pins. Small and Large. Each one can be worn different ways.

Here is a nice selection of handcrafted bobbie pins

Headbands have become very popular and of course anyone can wear headbands.

Our favorite type of hair accessory is the French Comb. Possibly the most under utilized because using them takes an extra step that once you learn, you'll never wear a claw clip again.

For a great selection of French Combs visit us here.

In addition, Pick Combs are a fun way to hold up your hair in various types of updos.

Small Combs have been around for years and are often worn to hold back the sides of your hair.

These brass combs are very durable yet light and elegant.

A few other types of hair accessories that we are working on creating for you are
Alligator clips
Pony Tail holders
Bun clips
and
Mantilla Combs

Finally you can also use hair sticks, hair bows or claw clips to highlight your daily routine.
